Zebra In this early work, created while Vasarely was a graphic designer in Paris, two zebras twine around each other against a black background. Their limbs overlap, creating a subtle chequerboard pattern and suggesting spatial depth as well as generating a sense of intimacy, energy, and sexual play. In Vasarely’s zebra portraits, the distinctive markings of the animal are transformed from something physical and empirical – pigment and hide – to mysterious metaphors for an almost transcendental Victor Vasarely, was a Hungarian-French artist, who is widely accepted as a "grandfather" and leader of the Op art movement. His work entitled Zebra, created in the 1930s, is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op art.
